The Lion of Amphipolis The Lion of Amphipolis.  Situated before Amphipolis on the west bank of the Strymona, near the bridge, is the famous Lion. It is a plastic art epitaph monument of the 4th Century B.C.
 
Amphipolis, where many tombs of the Hellenistic and Roman eras have been excavated, as well as impressive finds of the walls of Amphipolis which are mentioned extensively by Thucydides.
 
On leaving Amphipolis and on the road for Thessaloniki, one can see, in the place of the port of ancient Hionas, the remains of the Byzantine castle and the walls with towers which protected Caesaropoli, a town which was founded in 837A.D by the Emperor Theophilos.
 
Building remains of later archaic years on the beach of Kariani where the Thassian colony Galipsos settled.
 
Especially recommended is the old town of Kavala as well as the local archaeological museum.
 
Whoever wishes to follow in the footsteps of the Romans and Apostles must visit the ancient sites of Philippi.

Loutra Eleftheron
Loutra Eleftheron. At a distance of 15km from Kariani, are the mineral water springs of Loutra Eleftheron. Peaceful holdays with a good climate and baths in the warm springs with many therapeutic properties.
